Main Library Touching on the Development of Chinese Characters: A Calligraphic Perspective on Chinese Language
Ma Weihua, from China's Social and Cultural Development Foundation, is a renowned Chinese calligraphy artist. Born in 1958, he began practicing traditional Chinese calligraphy at age ten. He has devoted his life to his art, although his official job is in public service. Ma's artistic interests developed from calligraphy on paper to wood and seal (stone) carving and porcelain carving.
Ma has participated in numerous art exhibitions both in and out of China. He has won hundreds of prizes, including World Renowned Artist in China, the National Award of France, and the Special Art Award of the French Artist Association.
In his 40 years practicing calligraphy, Ma has tried all the styles from different periods in Chinese history. His current focus is the interactive relationship between calligraphic styles and the development of Chinese characters--the combination of artistic form and Chinese language.

Sprague Branch Library Encounters with Color: Oil Paintings by Sreedhari Desai
Sreedhari Desai was born and raised in India. She has a bachelor's degree in engineering, a master's degree in finance, and is currently working toward a doctoral degree in management. She has studied fine arts at Westminster College, but says that her most valuable art lessons came during her travels through Europe in 2002 and 2008, when she was exposed to the work of Dutch, Italian, French, and Spanish masters. She maintains studios in Noida, India, and Salt Lake City, Utah.
Desai writes, "What grabs my attention as an artist is te delicate interplay of rhythms and patterns that abound all around us. Often, we are so careworn that we scarce notice or delight in the gauzy wings of a fly, the rippling of a mountain stream, or the way that light bounces off of a lovingly handled teapot. My paintings communicate the beauty that our focused and orderly lives render inconspicuous to us. Though I often paint with brushes, my favorite implement is the palette knife. A palette knife is rather unforgiving and forces one to be decisive and quick. One can't pussyfoot around with such a tool, and it is precisely this dramatic intensity that appeals to my artistic sensibilities. When one paints, it is akin to casting a net. With a palette knife, the net has wider holes but it also means that if you catch something, it is bound to be big! My style is highly influenced by the glorious art movements of impressionism and expressionism, as well as my Indian heritage. Whereas my experiences in the West have freed me to explore subjects in new ways, my Indian roots impart a distinct sensibility to my compositions."
