Chinese Painting by Yaodong Hu
Public reception: Saturday, February 6, 2010.

Yaodong Hu lives in Shanghai, where he is a painter with Shanghai Baodao, Changhua Art Gallery, and a senior painter at the National Painting and Calligraphy Academy. A book about his work, The Painting Art of Yaodong Hu was published in China in September 2007. Hu's award-winning work has been included in solo and group exhibitions, published in newspapers, and published in Shanghai Bookstore Publication's The Collections of Oriental Art Academy: Calligraphy and Paintings.

Hu writes, "I have been fond of calligraphy and painting since my childhood. However, I had no time to develop this talent due to the demands of my career. Not until I retired did I have more free time to pursue my interest in this area. I entered the Senior Citizens' College to study Chinese calligraphy and painting, specializing in flower, bird, animal, and landscape painting. Fifteen years of diligent practice, hard work, and development--from basic to proficient, from imitation to innovation, from entry-level to high-level--have brought me vitality, good health, friendship, and wisdom. The benefits of my painting work are immeasurable. Not only are my golden years filled with joy, I have, indeed, realized my dream of becoming a master of Chinese painting."
until Friday, March 26 Main Library
West Desert Horizons by Sean Toomey
Public reception: Saturday, February 6, 4:00-5:30 p.m.

Sean Toomey began painting scenes from the New Jersey shore when he was twelve. He moved to Salt Lake City in 1972 and began interpreting the Utah landscape. Toomey has studied at the San Francisco Art Institute, the San Francisco Academy of Art, and the University of Utah, where he earned a degree in Arts Communications and Marketing. His paintings have been included in several exhibits including the Utah Watercolor Society 2008 Spring Open Exhibition, the Utah Watercolor Society 2008 Fall Open Exhibition, the Utah Watercolor Society 2009 Spring Open Exhibition, and the Traveling Exhibits Program of the Utah Arts Council in 2008-09 and 2009-10. More of his work can be seen at http://sites.google.com/site/seantoomeywatercolors.

Toomey writes, "I've seen the world in brushstrokes and washes since I was twelve. Lately, the wide expanses and the light and color of Utah's west desert have captured my attention. From Fish Springs to the Bear River Bird Refuge, and from the eastern shore of the Great Salt Lake to Pilot Peak, the landscapes are foreboding, but their starkness holds a unique beauty: a sea of salt, sand and mud; plants struggling against the heat and salinity; mountains cast from fire; skies of infinite variety and width; water in unlikely places. I use transparent watercolors and I paint without preliminary sketching to allow for an intuitive representation. I primarily paint with one- and two-inch brushes to capture scenes with the fewest strokes. I use paper with panoramic dimensions to best match the west desert horizons."

Young Adult Authors You'll Love to Meet: Author Panel and Book Signing
Meet some of Utah's popular young adult authors for a discussion of their work and the writing process. A book signing follows the discussion.

Sara Zarr is the acclaimed author of the recently released Once Was Lost, as well as the young adult novels Sweethearts and Story of a Girl (a National Book Awards finalist in 2007). Zarr began writing for young adults more than 12 years ago, and her inspirational story of getting published can be found on her Web site--a highly recommended read for aspiring writers.

Paul Genesse is the author of many works, including the two published books of The Iron Dragon series, titled The Golden Cord and The Iron Dragon. Fantasy fans will enjoy Genesse's discussion of his road to publication and his dreams of becoming a writer (which started at age four).

Bobbie Pyron's first novel, The Ring, was published in November 2009. A part-time librarian for the Salt Lake County Library system, Pyron has always had a love affair with the printed page. Her novel was inspired by her step-daughter's foray into boxing lessons.

In the spirit of Valentine's Day, come in and show some love for these wonderful local authors!

George Schaller Lecture
The University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law and the Wallace Stegner Center present a special lecture, titled "Last of the Silence: Wildlife Studies in the World's Wilderness," by renowned biologist and author George Schaller. Schaller is one of the world's most famous conservation biologists. Profiled in Peter Mathiessen's classic The Snow Leopard, he has done research in 23 countries, spending much of his time during the past half-century in the wilds of North and South America, Africa, and Asia. He has studied and helped protect species as diverse as the snow leopard, tiger, mountain gorilla, giant panda, Mongolian gazelle, Tibetan antelope, and Marco Polo sheep. His scientific and popular writings include more than 200 articles and 16 books, including The Year of the Gorilla, The Serengeti Lion, The Last Panda, and Wildlife of the Tibetan Steppe. He is a senior conservationist with the Wildlife Conservation Society and vice president of Panthera, an organization devoted to the conservation of wild cats.

Schaller will discuss his field studies that illustrate his research and conservation efforts on behalf of some of the world's most beautiful species, from mountain gorillas and giant pandas to lions and jaguars. He will also discuss his long-term efforts to help protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska and the wildlife of the Tibetan Plateau.

For more information, call the Stegner Center at 801-585-3440, e-mail stegner@law.utah.edu, or visit www.law.utah.edu/stegner.

This lecture is funded by the Cultural Vision Fund and cosponsored by The City Library, The Nature Conservancy, the Utah Museum of Natural History, the University of Utah College of Humanities, and The King's English Bookshop.
