Bring the whole family to the Kick-Off Party to sign up for the Summer Reading Program for kids, toddlers, teens, and adults, each with their own challenges and super cool prizes! With cool science-themed events from May 31 to August 2, kids, their parents, and their older siblings can engineer the best summer ever! Chemistry, robots, exotic animals, magic, puppets, reading, and so much more! Be sure to pick up a reading tracker on May 31, and plan your summer around these great events.
12:30pm • Main Library Auditorium
The party gets started with a presentation by Grant Imahara, robot expert from the popular Mythbusters TV show! Imahara’s prior visual effects and modelmaker credits as an animatronics engineer with Industrial Light & Magic include working on the new Star Wars Trilogy Episodes I–III, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, A.I.: Artificial Intelligence, among others. He updated the electronics in R2-D2 to modern standards for Star Wars Episodes I and II, and is one of only three official R2-D2 operators in the United States. He even suited up as C-3PO during his tenure at Lucasfilm for character appearances at publicity and press events! Anticipating the decline of model building and the rise of computer-generated imagery (CGI) and computer animation in the movie industry, Imahara jumped headlong into Discovery’s Mythbusters in 2005. Grant Imahara will be available for photo ops outside in the Science Festival on Library Square immediately following his presentation.
1:30–4pm • Library Square
Head outside for cool demonstrations by local science experts, music by Doc Young, and of course to visit the sign-up table for The City Library's Summer Reading Program! Science festival booth exhibitors and presenters include:

|Clark Planetarium||SLC Fire Department||SLCC Community Writing Center|
|Discovery Gateway||Mad Science||NHMU and the LEAP Into Science program|
|The Leonardo||Thanksgiving Point||Salt Lake County Library Services|
|Zaniac||U of U College of Engineering||KUED 7 feat. an appearance by Curious George! (photo ops)|
2:30pm • Main Library Auditorium
Join us back in the Auditorium for a delightful reptile show presented by Scales and Tails. They’ll bring creepy crawlies like spiders, scorpions, and roaches, along with snakes, lizards, and tortoises. Even a baby crocodilian! Stick around after the show for a chance to handle some of these animals!
