Artist Roger Whiting, working with students from Glendale Middle School, maps out the process of creating a collaborative work of art in the exhibition Anatomy of a Community Mosaic. The exhibition focuses on the creative elements of a 3' x 10' broken ceramic mosaic they created this spring. The exhibition includes photos of the creative process, plans for the mural, and student work.
In preparation for the project, students researched the area in which the mural would be located. Then they brainstormed words that described what they wanted the mural to depict. Student sketches were created as visual symbols of their ideas, which Whiting turned into a collage. Working from the collage, students used copies of it to create color studies. Once the final color proposal had been created, the project was presented for approval. Whiting says of the process, “The environment of a community should have its own distinct visual appeal. Allowing youth to participate in creating a community’s unique look sends youth the message that their voices matter and that the art which they create is important.” The University of Utah's Youth Empowerment Program paired Whiting with Glendale students.
