The Future of Spiral Jetty: Community and Collaboration
The monumental earthwork Spiral Jetty (1970) was created by artist Robert Smithson. Made of black basalt rocks and earth gathered from the site, the Spiral Jetty is a 15-foot-wide coil that stretches more than 1,500 feet into the lake. This exceptional art, of historical importance, unique beauty and remote location now faces potential irreparable damage given the sculpture’s inextricable relation to the surrounding landscape. A community information session will be held to discuss recently proposed mineral development of the Great Salt Lake that could negatively impact Spiral Jetty and its natural surrounds.
Join the Dia Art Foundation of New York, the formal steward of the sculpture, and its partners, the Great Salt Lake Institute (GSLI) at Westminster College and the Utah Museum of Fine Arts(UMFA), for a discussion centered on guaranteeing the future of this iconic American artwork. Panelists include Dia Director, Philippe Vergne; GSLI Director, Dr. Bonnie Baxter; and UMFA Executive Director, Gretchen Dietrich; moderated by Jennifer Napier-Pierce of KCPW.
