Databases for the Student

Virtually (yeah, pun intended) all the databases listed in "Databases A-Z" can be used for some assignments and research papers. Key titles are listed below with amplification on why they may be just what you're looking for.

Let's start with Pioneer. This is a virtual library created by the Utah State Library in cooperation with all of Utah's libraries. It offers a portal to many different research tools and databases. Among them are the various databases called EBSCOhost. These powerful tools index millions of full-text articles across all subject areas and are the same ones that are used by Utah's university and college students. Includes:

    EBSCO Animals provides in-depth information on a variety of topics relating to animals. The database consists of indexing, abstracts, and full text records describing the nature and habitat of familiar animals.

    Legal Collection

    MAS Ultra - School Edition is of note for high school students. This database provides full text for more than 550 popular general interest and current events publications with information dating as far back as 1975 for key magazines. It also has more than 500 full text pamphlets, 339 full text reference books, 84,074 biographies, 86,135 primary source documents, and an Image Collection of 107,135 photos, maps and flags.
    MasterFILE Premier is designed specifically for public libraries. This multidisciplinary database provides full text for more than 2,000 general reference periodicals with information dating as far back as 1975. Covering virtually every subject area of general interest, it also includes nearly 450 full text reference books.

    MEDLINE

    Middle Search Plus provides full text for nearly 150 popular magazines for middle school research. Information dates back to 1990. Also contained are 84,074 biographies, 86,135 primary source documents, and an Image Collection of 107,135 photos, maps and flags.

    TOPICsearch is a current events database that allows researchers to explore social, political & economic issues; scientific discoveries; and other popular topics. It contains full text for over 78,000 articles from more than 3,000 diverse sources, including more than 1,550 full-text periodicals.

    Vocational and Career Collection

Similar to many of the above databases are Expanded Academic ASAP (aka Infotrac) with over 13 million scholarly articles, General Reference Center Gold (aka Infotrac), a general interest database for articles from newspapers, reference books and periodicals, many with full-text and images, and eLibrary, a reference tool with access to more than 2,000 full-text magazines, newspapers, books, and transcripts - plus thousands of maps, pictures, web links, and audio/video files. Newsbank (via Pioneer) provides full-text information and perspectives from over 170 U.S. and international news sources including both The Deseret News and the Salt Lake Tribune. SIRS (via Pioneer) is another highly-acclaimed general reference database containing thousands of full-text articles exploring social, scientific, health, historic, business, economic, political and global issues. Articles and graphics are selected from over 1,500 domestic and international publications. All of these databases cover the full range of subject areas.

When you need biographical information, Biography Resource Center contains narrative biographies and full-text articles on any person of note throughout the world. Search by name, occupation, nationality, gender or other personal facts.

For literature assignments try Literature Resource Center. It's a comprehensive online literary site, with extensive reference material including biographical, bibliographical, critical, and contextual information on more than 120,000 authors and their works. Novelist is a fiction database that provides subject heading access, reviews, annotations, and much more for over 120,000 fiction titles. It also includes other content of interest to fiction readers, such as Author Read-alikes, Book Discussion Guides, Book Talks, and Feature Articles.

In a category by itself, LearningExpressLibrary (aka Learn-a-test) provides a completely interactive online learning platform of practice tests and tutorial courses designed to help patrons, students, and adult learners succeed on the academic or licensing tests they must pass. You'll get immediate scoring, complete answer explanations, and individualized analysis of your results. To sign in you will need to invent your own login and password. Once in, you can test your math skills or take their superb writing course.


Other databases of interest include:

Culturegrams provides concise and up-to-date country reports on 187 cultures of the world. Each report provides an insider's perspective on daily life, customs, and history with sections covering population, their national symbols and anthem, and even a sample recipe. Also featured are sections for kids covering 68 countries and reports on each of the 50 U. S. states and the District of Columbia.

Gale Virtual Reference Library is a database of encyclopedias and specialized reference sources for multidisciplinary research. These reference materials once were accessible only in the library, but now you can access them online from the library or remotely 24/7. The City Library's collection currently includes Grzimek's Animal Life Encyclopedia, West's Encyclopedia of American Law, Gale Encyclopedia of Mental Disorders, Junior Worldmark Encyclopedia of the Nations, and U*X*L Encyclopedia of Science.

Grove Music Online is an integrated music resource on the web, including the full text of The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, The New Grove Dictionary of Opera and The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz.

Historical New York Times is reproduced, cover-to-cover, in full-page digital images-from news stories and editorials to graphics and advertisements, covering 1851-2001.

Facts On File World News Digest includes the complete archive of this publication of record back to 1940, which is updated every week. It also features a live Reuters® newsfeed, updated hourly. Special "Top Stories" timelines deliver, decade by decade, listings linked to original coverage of top news stories back to October 1940.
